SSL Certificate is a digital certificate which encrypts information between server and browser.
It was usually used on the e-commerce websites to secure credit card transactions, data transfer and logins, however, it became a standard when it comes to any website, even blog.
If you don’t have a https protocol installed on your domain, it may hurt your search engine results position. Companies as Google recently announced that they will favor websites with SSL certificate over those ones which don’t have it. It used to cost quite a lot to buy an SSL certificate, however, the time is changing.
The good news is, that you can get your Free SSL certificate on your WordPress website if you have a web hosting at Bluehost!
Free SSL certificate is also available in other web hosting providers, so if you already have a web hosting account, check it with your provider.
We are going to have a look on how to install free SSL certificate on a Bluehost account:
This Is How To Install Free WordPress SSL Certificate
To enable the free SSL certificate on a WordPress site, follow these steps:
- Log into your Bluehost control panel.
- Click on WordPress Tools, at the top of the page.
- On the left hand side, click the Security tab.
- At the top of the Security tab of WordPress tools, select your site from the dropdown list.
- Find the option labeled SSL Certificate, and click on the switch to turn it on.
This automatic installation will take care of everything, there is no need to update code or install any plugins in this situation.
There is only one thing you need to do in order to make SSL work on your WordPress website:
Go to the WordPress dashboard of your website and navigate to Settings → General.
Change the WordPress Address (URL) and also Site Address (URL) from “http” to “https”.
Before you save these settings make sure, that the SSL certificate has already been set up on your account.
It can take awhile and if you change your domain name address sooner than the SSL is installed on your domain, then it will break your site.
So make sure that you go to your hosting account, and check whether your SSL has already been installed and is active.
You will find it either in your “WordPress tools” section or in the “domains” section.
Once you update your domain name and SSL certificate is activated, you will be automatically logged off your WordPress dashboard.
